Wainscoting, wainscoting everywhere.

Changes are starting to happen very quickly.

One of the things we lack in The Shakedown is storage space, and so with this expansion storage became a priority.

Thanks to Marvin, we’ll have more storage than we’ll know what to do with!

Marty and Heather have become experts at hanging wainscoting. This is one of the first steps in the upstairs pinball lounge transformation.

Our new, custom, front window! This is going to be amazing in the summer.
Thanks to Tim Pennington for helping us with the install!

The little room gets its own logo!

We’ve been pretty quiet about our expansion lately but that doesn’t mean things aren’t happening! They’re just kind of boring things, like plumbing and drywall.
But, THIS is something to tell you about: Matt Curtis has been working on some logo design for us! We were looking for something that was somewhat modeled after the logo seen in the old photo we found for The Racket store that existed about 100 years ago on Bay St.

Thanks Matt!

We interrupt this discussion about The Racket to bring you…

It’s been almost four years, and our customers have been asking for them just about that long, we finally have t-shirts and hoodies for The Shakedown!

Now, there’s a little extra twist that goes along with the sale of this fine ware. Here’s the thing, our sound equipment has been pummeled for almost four years now. It’s about time for some serious upgrades. But we need a little (okay, a lot) of extra cash for that. And we want to find that cash the good ol’ fashioned way: SELL STUFF!
Proceeds from Shakedown merch and gift certificate (coming soon) sales will go towards sound equipment maintenance and upgrades.
You look better. We sound better.

It’s Starting To Get Exciting!!

If you’ve been by The Shakedown recently, you may have noticed the plastic sheet up where two pinball machines used to be. After what seemed to be an eternity in the city permitting phase of things, an approval was in hand and the Daylight (the building owners) crew immediately started taking down walls and putting up framing.

There used to be a wall here. Yes, we ARE keeping the paint job.

Framing for the walls of the future upstairs bathroom is up. (Did know that the city requires a that a bathroom is ADA compliant and useable by someone in a wheelchair even if on a second story floor that’s not accessible by wheelchairs? Wrap your head around that one.)

Thanks for the article, Bellingham Business Journal!

Oliver of the Bellingham Business Journal did a lovely piece about The Shakedown and our expansion. It can be found here.

Those Were In A Casket Maker’s Building? Yes, that will do.

The reclaimed wood gods shined upon us yet again. A friend recommended we talk with GR Plume out in Ferndale about ideas for making a bartop. Gordon Plume showed us a few huge douglas fir beams that he said were reclaimed, from the building of a CASKET MAKER. With a story like that, obviously, we and these beams were meant to be. We found more about the history of the building here.

Gordon and his crew have created a truly beautiful piece for our bartop. Here it is unfinished.

The Stories This Wood Could Tell…

While we’re working with a pretty tight budget for creating The Racket, there are a few bits and pieces we wanted to be unique and not look like we just happened to come across them in the used section of the restaurant supply store. We started scouring local salvage places for materials we might somehow be able to incorporate. We saw this stack of bleacher wood at Skagit Salvage Supply and knew these would be our tables.

We love stuff with history. And this wood was first in Anacortes High School and then donated to a local swimming pool. Our wood is somewhere there in this photo from the swimming pool below.

And now, our friend Jonny is making it beautiful again.

We’ll have a jukebox!

The Racket will have a 100 CD jukebox. What album would you put in there?

We’re expanding!!!!

The Shakedown, Shakey's, Bellingham, WA, Pinball

See those pictures up there? The first includes a For Rent sign in the window. The second doesn’t. That’s because we just signed a lease to expand into our neighboring space! (Oh, and it’s now harshly apparent that the fabric in the windows of The Shakedown that was black 3.5 years ago is no longer black…)

We’re excited to soon introduce you to The Racket, Bar and Pinball Lounge! We’re knocking a doorway between the two spaces to create a cozy side bar downstairs, with a second floor packed with pinball machines.

Check in on this blog in the coming months for updates, to see how things are progressing and to learn more about The Racket!
