For many years I've been interested in ballads (American and European, often Medieval in origin) and have made them the primary basis of my solo performance over the past two years. The texts and tunes I use for vocals and banjo are well researched and usually an amalgam of multiple sources, leaving interpretation open. Beyond that the banjo riffs are my own made up accompaniments, and I strive for a signature ornate wall of sound much of the time. My instrument and playing technique were developed as early as the 17th century in the Caribbean and early US by an enslaved West African diaspora. For me, this instrument is a direct connection between baroque music and the blues and folk music that influence much of metal. I maintain this broad historical perspective out of an appreciation and respect for the cultures who developed the music. To a lesser degree, I do perform other people's or friends’ or my own songs in my shows. I like to stay busy with a variety of other genres/projects. I share bills with both acoustic metal acts and folk musicians who share my interest in the ballad genre.
